Dr Smita Agarwal
MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FRANZCO
Dr Smita Agarwal is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with special interest in refractive cataract surgery, glaucoma and anterior segment eye diseases. She has performed over 5000 cataract surgeries with excellent results.
Dr Agarwal completed her Ophthalmology training at Monash Medical Centre, Victoria where she also completed her advanced training in cataract surgery. She has also undertaken phacoemulsification fellowship with Dr Abhay Vasavada MS, FRCS, a world renowned ophthalmic surgeon.
Dr Agarwal provides services ranging from routine eye exams to treatment of serious, sight-threatening diseases. She provides comprehensive diagnoses and innovative treatments for patients of all ages. Dr Agarwal specialises in cataract surgery and has keen interest in other surgeries including pterygium excision, ectropion, entropion, excision of lid tumours and upper lid surgery (blepharoplasty) and laser treatment. She conducts a variety of clinics including macular degeneration, glaucoma and retinal clinics. She also performs Intravitreal lucentis injections for macular degeneration. Dr Agarwal uses the latest technology and widely available intraocular lenses suitable to the individual’s eyes.
Dr Agarwal has worked as a fractional Staff Specialist (Ophthalmology) at Westmead Eye Hospital, Westmead where she taught advanced cataract surgery to Ophthalmology registrars for about three years. She currently works as a VMO (Ophthalmology) at Wollongong/Shellharbour Hospitals, Nowra Private Hospital and Wollongong Day Surgery where she operates almost every fortnight. Dr Agarwal has authored several research papers and case reports in Australia and overseas. Some of which have been published in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Journal of Ophthalmic & Plastic Surgery and Medical Journal of Australia.
Dr Agarwal has a deep sense of responsibility to the society. She regularly visits less privileged countries and provides her services without any fee. Her last such visit was to Fiji with a like minded group of eye specialists and other medical professionals from Australia.
